Resume / Cover Letter Services:

Hi Tara

I just want to let you know how your resume landed me a job I never thought I could have. Not in a million years!

Below is a quick rundown of how I secured 10 interviews with 31 applications sent in 6 days. Closing dates for some of the applications I have sent have not even closed as yet.

Firstly I have actively looked for work, which means I set a goal to send a minimum of four applications via email etc every single day. I would think about what products I like and use, for example my '3' mobile, nestle products, my preferred bank and insurance etc. I would visit their websites and check on their 'careers' page and make sure I sent the application via their own website.

When I applied for jobs, I would look them up at Google, see what they were about, and work out whether I would like to work there or not. It goes both ways.

Secondly, I made up a specific folder with a copy of my resume with a letter, one copy of my resume without a letter and most important of all, my resume included a small picture of myself. I felt this was a personal touch and would jog an employer's memory, which it did.

I then made a folder for 'applications sent in May' where I made a copy of the resume and/or letter; renamed the resume to reflect my name and the job I was applying for. That way when the employer received my resume, it wouldn't have (Documents/Settings/My documents/ Jens Stuff/Resumes/job/blabla) for example, I felt it more professional and easier to keep track of.

In the folder say, for example Allianz, I would have the resume and letter I have sent - obviously changing the position I was applying for, changing the name of the contact and adding a description or attribute that they specifically requested in the job ad. Most important of all, I copy and pasted their job ad in a word document and saved it in the correct folder, eg Allianz. That way, when I received a phone call, I could quickly bring up the ad, my resume and letter and usually have a phone interview right then and there; recalling what they wanted in an applicant.

Just as an aside; any interview whether on the phone or in person, I would walk/talk not expecting the job, but with the thought that this will give me an opportunity to practice interview techniques until I get the job I want. That way you keep positive, motivated and it shows.

It is very easy when you get phone calls from prospective employers to get confused and not remember what job is for who etc, what they specifically wanted as an applicant and to get flustered, however, this counteracted that.

I have had a busy week, I have had 3 phone interviews, and have done 4 face to face interviews this week, and have another 3 next week.

However, I don't need them anymore; I applied for a job as a Customer Service Representative for a building company. At the interview, he was impressed with the resume - how factual and well written it was, he also liked the photo as it gave a face to the name. He said it took guts and that meant that I was serious in putting myself out there. Hey I'm no supermodel, just me! He loved the setting out of the resume, and called me back yesterday for another interview.

When I went back to the employer for the second interview, he offered me not the Customer Service role, but a newly created role just for me! He said I am too smart and switched on for that role, and instead made me the Business Development Manager for their firm!! Wow! I knew I was capable, and honestly when you talk about yourself positively often enough, you believe it and so does your employer. You do have things to offer, it is just a matter of working out your absolute best bits and driving it towards the job vacancy.

My main positive point, which for some they may not think it would be a positive; is the fact that I have five children, have always worked part time and for a while full time, I can multi-task and be motivated, I subscribe to treasury emails, read two novels a week and am an avid watcher of government question time and world current affairs; this broke down barriers and stimulated conversation. I have done this to keep my brain stimulated and can keep on top of everything and stay positive because I needed to. My employer realized these attributes would benefit them as I can multi-task and focus on specific tasks without falling apart.

To have my new employer recognise my brain, my capability and drive and organisation, is so rewarding. Honestly I can't wipe the smile off my face! I am thrilled and determined to do the business proud. Who says life does not begin at 40??

I think you are the Job Genie and you should have a warm glow about you as you have turned our family life around; for me to secure a job like this - 25 hours permanent part time with 5 children and moving toward the career I always have wished for is a dream come true.

When one’s age is 50 plus most industries have a prejudice against employing the aged. I had a few responses, but nothing particularly interesting, so settled back into my happy little rut... I was given the project of co-ordinating the XXX move to another new building in Melbourne's CBD and, over the past six months work tirelessly in order to effect this move with very few problems or issues - so tirelessly, that after eight weeks with no weekends, 50 hours of flex-time and 70 hours of overtime, I was so tired and exhausted that I fell quite ill. This was around five weeks ago.

Anyway, four weeks ago - totally out of the blue - I received a call from a recruitment consultant who, unbeknownst to myself, had a copy of the CV I'd sent out all those months ago. He had a position that he'd been trying to fill for three months or so, and after 70-odd applicants had reached my CV... He asked if I was still happy at the XXX, which I was, and followed up by asking how much money I'd consider as an incentive to move on. I told him I wasn't really looking, but when he suggested this position would pay somewhere around $XXk I thought I'd have a look.

The next week I met with the Vic/SA/WA HR manager for CB Richard Ellis (CBRE) and, the following day, the account manager for CBRE's national property management account for Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu - one of the Big Four!! By the time I arrived home from this second meeting I had been offered the position of Facilities Manager, Global Corporate Services, Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu; on a package that I negotiated up to $XXk!!

All this on the strength of a 16 month old CV, and two meetings (whilst suffering terribly with a gastric ulcer!)!! As I write this, I'm on two weeks break before starting at Deloitte on 23 June 2008. This has all happened so suddenly that it still hasn't sunk in, but I have NO doubt in my mind that none of this would have been possible without your service. It was definitely money well spent!
