ARTICLE:
Why you need a résumé by Aussie Résumés
================================
It's unlikely you will gain an interview without a succinct, compelling
covering letter and résumé.
The combined factor of the two is the greatest asset you have for marketing
your skills and attributes to a prospective employer. After all, it is this
initial application that will determine if you get an interview. Of course, once
you have an interview, it's up to you to get the job!
In today's competitive business world companies aggressively market their
products and services to the public. Likewise, you are no exception when it
comes to job-hunting. Don't be shy in putting your best points forward, as a
prospective employer cannot ascertain what benefit you can bring to their
organisation unless you boldly tell them!
And often if they are looking at over 250 applications for the one position,
you don't have a great deal of time to make an impression on the hiring manager.
They will know exactly what they are looking for, and if they can't find it
quickly and easily in your résumé, they may not consider it any further.
Your covering letter and résumé is your greatest advertisement. Make sure
it is constantly up-to-date, and is tailored for each position you apply for.
There is nothing employers hate more than reading a résumé or covering letter
which has, quite clearly, been written for another position!

Q & A - Unemployed for 6 months
=================================
Q: I have been unemployed for over 6 months, and have been unable to get even
one interview! Despite applying for hundreds of jobs. I am getting very
frustrated and depressed over the whole thing. What am I doing wrong?!! - Sonia
A: Sonia, I haven't seen your résumé, and I don't wish to make
presumptions. But based on what you have told me in your letter, I'm wondering
if you are including the right information? There could be numerous reasons -
all directly linked to your application in regards to the position you are
applying for. For starters, do you have a career objective? Over three quarters
of employers we surveyed wish to see this. And, Sonia, it must be in-line with
the position you are applying for and not wishy-washy. Does your previous
employment history match the type of roles you are applying for - ie are your
duty statements demonstrating your skill base? If you are changing career
direction are you succinctly describing what benefits you can bring to the
employer? Aside from your résumé, it is vital you include a compelling
covering letter. Is this addressing the criteria advertised? Sonia, I have only
covered a few points here... to go into comprehensive detail without seeing your
résumé is impossible. As stated, it could be a number of different factors,
including your résumé, covering letter and positions being applied for (have
you been through our Job Matching Profile under Career Resources on our
website?). Please email your résumé for a free critique in order for me to
gain a better understanding of your situation.

Review: Career One
URL: http://www.careerone.com.au
A leading job search site, with national exposure through their chain of
newspapers. A great amount of information is available, including regular
newsletters to keep you up-to-date with what's happening in your particular
industry. Well worth a visit for any prospective job-seeker.

ANZ Advertised Job Vacancies
=================================
I read with interest lately that the number of vacancies advertised in
newspapers, nationally, increased by 3.2 percent between August and September.
This is good news for those seeking a new job, especially considering
advertised vacancies are now over 10% higher than at the same time last year.
All this, combined with the unemployment rate being 0.6% lower than the same
time last year (6.2% compared to 6.8%), points to a much healthier job market
for those seeking a new position.
So what better time to update your résumé to secure your dream job!
(Source: ANZ Bank, ABS)
Bear in mind, most vacancies are not advertised through traditional media -
so never forget the all-important "networking" tool.
