What would you do if you knew it was impossible to
fail?
by Tara West
What would you do if you knew it was impossible to fail?
Please ponder that question and allow your thoughts to
free-fall. What would your life look like if you left all the doors open
instead of pulling them shut, one by one?
How would you be living your life today if you walked
through those doors? If you knew that on the other side of that door, you could
have whatever you dreamed or wanted, as long as you took the step and walked
through it, rather than turn away and shut the door.
What is stopping you from walking through those doors?
Fear of failure? Elbert Hubbard said it best when he stated “There is no failure
except in not trying.”
So let me ask the question again; what would you do if you
knew it was impossible to fail?
There is no failure – only steps toward self discovery.
Failure is a euphemism for quitting or not trying – so it is impossible for you
to fail if you walk through those doors.
Is it Fear that is stopping you from taking the leap
through that door? It might be fear of failure, fear of change, fear of
success.
I was in a teleclass the other day with training leader,
Bill Turpin, from the International Coaching Academy (www.icoachacademy.com),
and he put it very well:
FEAR =
False
Expectations
Appearing
Real
American Novelist, Marilyn French, aptly said “Fear is a
question. What are you afraid of and why? Our fears are a treasure house of self
knowledge if we explore them.”
I urge you to hold onto your goals and dreams, have faith
in your abilities, and start running through those doors that represent each
area of your life. Fling back the door, feel the adrenalin pumping through your
veins, and excel in the fact that you took action to make your goals and dreams
a reality.
Remember: failure isn’t really failure – just a
learning curve, or self discovery; fear is an emotional response to something
that appears real; and taking action – like walking through those doors – leads
to change.
How is your life starting to look? Are your doors
open or shut?
INTRODUCTION TO THE PRO BONO
PROGRAM at Aussie Résumés
Do you need help in defining your goals and taking the
next step to begin your new journey? Would you like to partner with a coach for
your journey?
Hi, my name is Tara and many of you are familiar with who I
am through the pages of this newsletter and the work either myself or a team
member may have completed for you at one time or another.
Having “informally” coached for many years, I decided to
take the plunge and invest in my education to gain formal qualifications in
something I am passionate about: helping people achieve their dreams and
goals through self exploration, discovery and action. So I embarked on my
journey towards Certification as a Professional Coach through the world’s 2nd
biggest coaching school, the International Coach Academy. I am on track to
graduate in December of this year.
Whilst my niche is Career Coaching, I will also specialise in
transformational and life coaching. Over the coming months you’ll get to hear
more about this through our newsletter and website, as well as the introduction
of Career Coaching to Aussie Résumés. Please
click here if you would like to register your interest in advance for some
coaching.
I am currently in the process of putting together a Pro
Bono Program at Aussie Résumés, where I’ll personally be offering pro-bono
coaching to select individuals who are committed to taking action and achieving
their goals.
I’m so excited about this new Program that I haven’t set
all the details in concrete yet – I’m not sure how many clients I will choose
each year to join this program. However, what I do know is that I am champing
at the bit to make a start with this program and I’m opening it up now for a
start in June.
What is Coaching?
-
“A coach is an advocate, a sounding board, a cheerleader,
an accountability partner, a truth teller, and a supporter.” (Ref: ICA CPP
Program FC101.)
-
Coaching is a partnership that helps you shape your
vision and goals, define your priorities, and empowers and encourages you in
mapping your course and charting your way through the seas.
-
It’s all about YOU – the unique individual that you are.
-
It’s about actively listening to YOU, helping you stay
focused and on track.
-
And yes, also self discovery that allows you to develop
and discover who you are, your dreams and aspirations.
What Coaching Isn’t:
-
Therapy, counselling or mentoring. Coaching focuses on
your strengths, not weaknesses, and supports you in achieving your goals and
dreams.
Do you want to be challenged? Get
out of your comfort zone? Have thought-provoking questions thrown at you? Do
you want to stretch yourself? Do you want to reach out and touch the stars?
As mentioned above, I’m in the throes of putting together a
Pro Bono Program. You’ll have to bear with me as I haven’t put together
all the paperwork or the finer details as yet (stay turned for that one!).
However, I’m keen to start in June and I’m looking for a client who is
committed to making a difference in their life and being a part of the
Inaugural Pro Bono Program.
If you want to be challenged, then take the first step by
completing a brief expression of interest.
right now. This page also provides some detail about the coaching program.
I look forward to partnering you on your journey!!

What signals are you sending?
by Tara West
Last month I waded through 400+ applications for our new
Resume Writer position that we had available. I’d forgotten what it was like!
It’s been years since we have needed to formally advertise for a Resume Writer
position at Aussie Resumes and it was quite a mammoth task.
It was also a reality check on what most hiring managers go
through these days. I must confess, I was very frustrated at what the majority
of applicants were submitting – and the way they went about it. Not frustration
for me – but frustration that the applicant was doing themselves an injustice.
All I could think was “No wonder these people don’t get an interview.” I know
that sounds harsh. But it’s true. Mediocrity was the order of the day. Not a
very good signal that an applicant is sending me.
When you submit an application you should be looking at
everything from the employer’s point of view. Is the application tailored? Are
there any mistakes? Have you followed their instructions in the job advert? Do
you demonstrate a genuine desire to work for that company? Does your
application jump out and scream “Hey, I’m passionate about this type of
work!” What makes you better than everyone else?
Our past newsletters and articles on our website delve into
some of the points I have raised above; however, keep an eye out on future
newsletters for more advice on submitting your application.
So what signals did I receive from applicants? Lack of
attention to detail. Couldn’t follow instructions. Informal application. Not
interested in the primary objective of the role. Not interested in the work,
full stop! Couldn’t take the time to find out more – no research skills. Only
want the position until something else comes along. And the list goes on.
Here’s some things which really bugged me – or things which
jumped out at me as a no-no when submitting a formal application:
-
Addressed as “Dear”. I’m not their loved one.
-
Addressed as Sir / Madam. The advert clearly stated who
the application should be addressed to.
-
Addressed as Sir. Tara is a female name, not male.
-
Addressed as “Tara”. It’s a formal application and
should be treated as such. They don’t know me personally. This may seem a
little fuddy duddy; but at the end of the day, you are presenting yourself for
future employment – formal is best.
-
Spelling mistakes. Did the person even read the
application before submitting it? Or indeed, put it through a spell checker?
Silly mistakes which would have been picked up if it had.
-
Poor punctuation – actually, very poor. Commas in the
wrong spot or none at all, and so on.
-
Receiving cover letters that said something like “… apply
for the position of Data Entry Operator”. Hello?! Hmmm. The role was
advertised as Resume Writer / Admin Support.
-
Receiving applications where the applicant had quite
obviously not taken the time to read the position description. Their
application was geared toward an entirely different role.
-
Not following instructions. Applicants blindly buzzed
off their resume and that was it. I asked for a completed application form,
cover letter, resume and statement addressing selection criteria. Around 80%
didn’t submit a completed application form.
-
Receiving applications that couldn’t even be opened.
-
Emailing applicants to acknowledge receipt of their
application – bounced messages.
Ok – I will stop. You get the picture.
Don’t jeopardise your chances of gaining an interview! Job
hunting, or applying for jobs, isn’t something you should be doing in 5 minutes
flat with no thought whatsoever. If you take the time to apply for roles which
genuinely interest you, and ensure you tailor your application and demonstrate
your passion, then you WILL gain more interviews.
Keep an eye out on future newsletters for more advice in
this area.
I would like to take this opportunity in welcoming
Leigh Shome to Aussie Résumés. Leigh is based in Melbourne and starts on
the 23rd of May. I’m very excited at the skills and abilities she is
bringing to Aussie Résumés. Stay tuned for more information!

Years ago when I was a vice president of
corporate development, I created a system of evaluation for our employees that
was used to determine everyone’s yearly bonus. I told my boss that I found it
curious that when the employees were measured against the standards of the
system I’d developed, very few had performed at the highest level.
While everyone had earned a salary and a
bonus, only 10 percent had gotten the full incentive that was available to
people who met all their performance goals.
I asked the president of the company,
“If you look at the people in this top 10 percent who achieved the maximum
bonus, what do you think they have in common?”
Without hesitation, the president said,
“Confidence. They exude confidence, so they get results.”
Confidence is a belief in yourself and
your abilities that delivers to you the things you want.
What you desire may not come exactly
when you expect it, or in the form you’d imagined, but make no mistake:
Confidence is a tremendously powerful emotion that will change your vibration
and bring you what you hope for. Don’t talk yourself out of feeling
self-assured, and don’t let anyone else try to either. Only you know what you’re
capable of and the passion you have for your goal. Your confidence is like a
strong tailwind pushing you along toward your destiny.
Confidence will lift you up no matter
what the challenge, helping you access all your personal resources. By feeling
faith in yourself, you’ll be aware of your many gifts and be able to use them to
make your situation better. If you’ve lost your job, you’ll remember all your
strengths, talents, and connections with other people who can help you find a
new and better one. If you’ve ended a relationship or friendship, you’ll know
for certain that you’ll attract a loving, wonderful partner or friend, and your
confidence will draw them in just as if you were a magnet.
